Third Fork and Second Fork Squaw Creek Re-vegetation Project

Project:  The Emmett Ranger District has replaced three culverts in the Squaw Creek
drainage for fish passage and restore hydrologic function.  The Renwyck Creek culvert was replaced last year and both the Wilson Creek and Third Fork Creek culverts were replaced in 2004.  The culvert replacements were successful but the associated disturbance to the stream banks at each site was in need of re-vegetation.

Our club volunteered to supply the manpower to do the job and eight members were able to commit their time for the project, which we were able to complete planting over 500 plants in two days, much to the delight of Melissa Yenko, Emmett District Hydrologist, and John Erikson, Emmett District Ranger for the Boise National Forest.

City of Boise says "no" to Atlanta Gold mine

Dear Don:

On a crisp, beautiful late winter morning last month, I stood on the Greenbelt along with concerned citizens, students from RiverStone International School and Boise's clean-water mascot, Eddy Trout, to announce my opposition to Atlanta Gold Corp.'s proposed cyanide heap-leach pit mine on the headwaters of the Boise River.

Because you have contacted the City of Boise to share your views on this important issue, I wanted to send you this update. I'm pleased to report that on March 6, the Boise City Council joined me by unanimously approving a resolution against the gold mine proposal.

As you know, Atlanta Gold Corporation Inc., a Canadian-owned subsidiary, has proposed construction of an open-pit mine and cyanide heap leach facility near the town of Atlanta in Elmore County, about 60 miles northeast of Boise. Mining supplies, including sodium cyanide, blasting agents and up to 8.5 million gallons of diesel fuel, would be transported to the mine site on a series of unpaved roads that parallel the Boise River.

The mine is simply an intolerable threat to the Boise River, the environment, and the citizens of Boise. It's our duty to protect this river for our community and our children. In opposing this mine, we are taking a stand for Boise's livability.

Although the City of Boise has no regulatory authority over the mine, we have received more than 2,000 letters, postcards and petitions from citizens like you, almost all opposed to the project. Many of you also were among the 300-plus people -- again, most of them critical of the mine proposal -- who turned out for a "town hall" meeting on the issue in November.

I want to thank you for your interest in this important issue, for your concern about our beautiful Boise River, and most of all for helping to make Boise the most livable city in the country.

Best wishes,
